Could Davey Scatino Have Killed Tony Soprano? Robert Patrick Weighs In

Davey Scatino was one of the most tragic characters on The Sopranos — a regular guy whose life collapsed after he crossed the wrong friend. Played by Robert Patrick, Davey was a compulsive gambler who lost everything to Tony Soprano. But years later, fans started asking a wild question: could Davey have come back and killed Tony in the show’s infamous final scene?

Patrick doesn’t think so — but he’s honored people even considered it.

In the series finale, the screen cuts to black while Tony Soprano, played by James Gandolfini, sits in a diner with his family. Ever since, viewers have debated what really happened. One long-running theory suggests that a suspicious man in the diner could be Davey, returning for revenge after Tony destroyed his life.

Patrick says he didn’t know about that theory at all.

“Only David Chase knows what really happened,” Patrick explained. “If it was supposed to be me, no one ever called.”

Still, the idea stuck with him — in a good way.

“I feel blessed that people would even think about my character at the end,” he said. “That’s pretty amazing.”

Davey only appeared in three episodes during season two, but his story left a mark. After getting pulled into a high-stakes poker game, Davey racks up massive debt to Tony. Tony then strips Davey’s sporting goods store for cash, leaving him bankrupt, abandoned by his family, and forced to leave New Jersey for a fresh start in Nevada.

Despite the damage, Patrick doesn’t believe Davey was capable of murder.

“He was desperate and broken,” the actor has suggested over the years, “but not a killer.”

Patrick, who many fans also know from Terminator 2: Judgment Day and The X-Files, has often spoken fondly about working with Gandolfini. One moment in particular stayed with him: before filming a brutal scene where Tony beats Davey, Gandolfini leaned in and said, “Bring your A-game… how’s your balls?” Then he completely terrified him on camera.

That line became legendary for Patrick.

Years later, he paid tribute to Gandolfini by using the same quote on Tulsa King, where Patrick plays mob boss Jeremiah Dunmire opposite Sylvester Stallone.

“The Sopranos fans are watching Tulsa King,” Patrick said. “There’s definitely a throughline. That’s why I threw that line in.”

So did Davey Scatino kill Tony Soprano? Probably not. But the fact that fans are still debating it — decades later — is proof of how powerful both the character and the show remain.
