Henry Winkler to Star in NBC Legal Comedy Last Chance Lawyer

Kathy Bates’ Matty Matlock from CBS’ hit drama Matlock may soon face friendly competition from another seasoned TV attorney. NBC is developing Last Chance Lawyer, a new comedy starring and executive produced by Henry Winkler.

The project comes from writers and executive producers Mike Gagerman and Andrew Waller, best known for Search Party. The series centers on Howard Greenberg (Winkler), a hard-driving and unconventional criminal defense attorney who fiercely defends underdog clients. Howard believes that no matter what his clients are accused of, the system itself is always guiltier.

Winkler, Gagerman and Waller will executive produce alongside Jed Mercurio and Jimmy Mulville for Hat Trick Media. The studio behind the project is Universal Television, part of Universal Studio Group.

Last Chance Lawyer marks NBC’s return to legal comedy just months after the Night Court revival wrapped up its three-season run. It also reunites Winkler with NBC, where he previously appeared in a recurring role on Parks and Recreation.

The Happy Days alum is showing no signs of slowing down. A 10-time Emmy nominee, Winkler won his first Emmy in 2018 for HBO’s Barry. Recently, he spoke candidly about retirement on the IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson podcast, saying he works constantly and has no plans to stop. “People keep asking me if I’m going to retire,” Winkler said, adding that the idea is “the furthest thing from my imagination.”

Winkler was most recently seen opposite Bob Odenkirk in the feature Normal and appeared in an episode of Apple TV+’s Loot last fall. He also has the upcoming film Rolling Loud slated for release this year.

Gagerman and Waller, who co-wrote the 2014 comedy film Search Party, have previously developed projects for NBC as well as ABC, CBS, Paramount and FX.

If ordered to series, Last Chance Lawyer would add another veteran-led legal show to network television, this time with a comedic twist and a lead actor who clearly has no intention of hanging up his briefcase anytime soon.
