Netflix announced Tuesday that Jelly Roll, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Chrissy Teigen have signed on as judges for the streamer’s upcoming reboot of Star Search.
The new series will be hosted by Anthony Anderson and is set to premiere January 20 on Netflix.
A Live, Interactive Competition
Unlike many pre-recorded talent shows, Star Search will air live twice a week — Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT — and will feature real-time viewer voting, allowing audiences around the world to help decide which contestants advance.
According to the official logline, the reboot promises bigger talent, higher stakes, and a more interactive format than ever before. Each episode will spotlight rising performers across multiple categories, including music, dance, comedy, magic, variety acts, and juniors. Contestants will compete head-to-head in an arced competition with weekly eliminations, building momentum as the season progresses.
Netflix describes every live episode as “an unmissable event,” driven by global audience participation and immediate results.
A Legacy of Launching Stars
The original Star Search, hosted by Ed McMahon, ran in syndication from 1983 to 1995 and became a launchpad for some of the biggest names in entertainment. Alumni include Beyoncé, Adam Sandler, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Dave Chappelle, and Christina Aguilera, among others.
A previous reboot aired on CBS in 2003 with Arsenio Hall as host, but the revival was canceled after just one season.
Experienced Team Behind the Scenes
The Netflix version will be run by Jason Raff (America’s Got Talent) and David Friedman (Bring the Funny). The series is produced by Jesse Collins Entertainment, with Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon, Madison Merritt, Elaine Metaxas, Taraji P. Henson, and Steve Mosko serving as executive producers.
With a star-studded judging panel, live global voting, and a proven format that has launched generations of performers, Netflix’s Star Search is aiming to reclaim its place as a defining talent competition for a new era.
