On his show, Meyers joked that Trump once again tried to persuade Americans that everything is going wonderfully — and if it’s not, it’s the Democrats’ fault. Meyers described the speech as loud, angry, and completely disconnected from how many people are actually feeling.
During the address, Trump made a series of sweeping claims. He said other countries are “not laughing anymore” at the United States. He argued that “the worst thing” done by the Biden administration was what he called an “invasion at the border.” He also accused Democrats of “demanding” higher health insurance premiums.
Trump went even further, declaring, “One year ago our country was dead. We were absolutely dead. Our country was ready to fail, totally fail. Now we’re the hottest country anywhere in the world.”
That line, in particular, set Meyers off.
“Stop yelling at us, grandpa!” Meyers joked. “If you don’t want us to come home and visit you at the retirement home on Christmas, we’ll happily stay where we are.”
Meyers also mocked Trump’s attempt to hype up the country like a nightclub promotion. “If you need to tell people that America is the ‘hottest country in the world,’ that means it’s not,” he said. He compared it to a flyer advertising “the hottest club in Times Square,” warning that such places usually turn out to be empty — except for “50 dads from Wisconsin trying to figure out how a beer can cost $23.”
Beyond the jokes, Meyers criticized the substance of the speech. He said it was so packed with exaggerations and false claims that CNN’s fact-checker struggled to keep up.
Meyers ended on a more serious note, pointing out that many Americans are dealing with rising costs and a slowing economy. Instead of offering empathy or a clear plan to help, he said, Trump spent the address scolding the public.
“For people who are struggling right now,” Meyers concluded, “yelling at them through the TV is not a solution.”
