On a recent episode of her Good Hang podcast, Poehler shared a hilarious throwback story involving a tense moment on an airplane with her Mean Girls costar Ana Gasteyer.
The memory resurfaced when Gasteyer appeared as Poehler’s Christmas episode guest and reminded her of the incident.
“I remember being on the plane with you,” Gasteyer said, setting the scene.
Poehler quickly jumped in. “Yeah, we were on the plane, and I got in a fight with a guy,” she said with a grin.
Gasteyer added an important detail: her daughter Frances — now 23 — was a baby at the time and was also on the flight.
That’s when things clicked for Poehler.
“Oh my God, with the baby around?” she asked, laughing. According to Gasteyer, the man sitting nearby had taken issue with Poehler’s language.
“He got mad that you were swearing in front of the baby,” Gasteyer reminded her.
Poehler then explained how it all started. A fellow first-class passenger complained that she was being too loud and told her to tone it down.
“And my Boston came out,” Poehler said, joking about her no-nonsense response.
For Gasteyer, it was unforgettable.
“It was the best thing I’ve ever seen,” she said, clearly still impressed years later.
The story perfectly captures Poehler’s reputation as someone who doesn’t just play bold characters — she lives that energy in real life too. Whether it’s on screen, on a podcast, or at 30,000 feet, Amy Poehler clearly isn’t afraid to speak her mind.
