Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced the charges at a press conference, saying they carry a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole or the death penalty. Prosecutors allege that a knife was used in the killings, and the case includes the “special circumstance” of multiple murders, which makes it eligible for the death penalty. Hochman said a final decision on whether to seek capital punishment will be made later.
“Prosecuting cases involving family members are some of the most challenging and heart-wrenching cases this office faces because of the intimate and often brutal nature of the crimes,” Hochman said.
Nick Reiner was arrested Sunday night and booked early Monday morning on suspicion of murder. He is being held without bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles. Police said he was arrested without incident near the USC campus in the Exposition Park area, about 12 miles from the Reiners’ Brentwood home.
He was expected to make his first court appearance on Tuesday, but was not transported from jail. His attorney, Alan Jackson, told reporters that Reiner was not “medically cleared” to appear in court. Jackson is a former Los Angeles County prosecutor who has represented several high-profile defendants in the past.
Rob and Michele Reiner were found dead inside their home on Sunday afternoon around 3:40 p.m. Authorities said they had been stabbed to death, and the Los Angeles Police Department immediately began a homicide investigation.
Nick Reiner has previously spoken publicly about his struggles with addiction and homelessness. He also co-wrote the 2015 film Being Charlie, which was directed by his father and drew from his personal experiences.
The deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner sent shockwaves through Hollywood and beyond. Rob Reiner, the son of legendary comedian and writer Carl Reiner, rose to fame as “Meathead” on the classic sitcom All in the Family. He later became one of Hollywood’s most successful directors, known for films such as Stand by Me, This Is Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally, and A Few Good Men. Following news of the couple’s deaths, friends, colleagues, and fans around the world shared tributes honoring their lives and legacy.
