“If there’s one thing Donald Trump wants, it’s a hamburger,” Colbert joked. “If there’s a second thing, though, it would be to make you think that you’re crazy.” He added that moments like this are why he likes to remind viewers that “you’re not crazy — what’s happening is crazy.”
Colbert said Vanity Fair had essentially confirmed that feeling through 11 on-the-record interviews with Wiles, calling the profile an unusually candid look inside the White House. “And she dished, bish,” he quipped.
One of the most talked-about moments from the interview was Wiles describing Trump as having “an alcoholic’s personality,” despite the fact that he does not drink. Colbert seized on the line immediately. “I think it’s amazing that he doesn’t drink, because he sure sounds like it,” he laughed.
The host also addressed Wiles’s comments about Trump’s actions toward political opponents. Over the past year, Colbert noted, Trump has “weaponized the justice department in unprecedented ways” against figures such as James Comey and Letitia James. While Wiles insisted Trump is “not constantly thinking about retribution,” she also admitted that, at times, it may look that way — adding, “Who would blame him? Not me.”
“OK then, I’ll do it,” Colbert responded. “Donald Trump, I blame you!”
Colbert also mocked Wiles’s defense of Trump’s past friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Wiles told the magazine the two were “young, single playboys together.” Colbert shot back with his own description: “Young, single, sometimes married playboys in their 40s and 50s.” He continued with a biting joke about “carefree rapscallions partying with teenage girls and splitting a box of Cologuard,” adding sarcastically, “You know — youth!”
Another detail from the Vanity Fair report that caught Colbert’s attention was Wiles keeping a video monitor in her West Wing office showing a live feed of Trump’s social media posts. Positioned next to a fireplace, the setup struck Colbert as especially grim. “So there’s fire and a constant stream of Trump’s social media posts?” he asked. “Are you sure that’s your office? Because it sounds like hell to me.”
As always, Colbert blended humor with sharp criticism, turning Wiles’s own words into a scathing late-night takedown that quickly resonated with his audience.
