Kimmel addressed a Truth Social post in which Trump claimed Reiner died “due to the anger he caused others” through what he called “Trump derangement syndrome.” Reading the post aloud on his show, Kimmel said it showed a complete lack of compassion and leadership at a moment of tragedy.
“What we need at a time like this, besides common sense when it comes to guns and mental health care, is compassion and leadership,” Kimmel said. “We did not get that from our president, because he has none of it to give. Instead, we got a fool rambling about nonsense.”
Kimmel admitted he initially thought Trump’s post was fake. “Even for him, that seemed like too much,” he said, adding, “But nothing is ever too much for him.”
The late-night host also reacted to Trump’s comments during an Oval Office press conference, where the former president was given a chance to walk back his remarks. Trump instead doubled down, saying he was “not a fan” of Reiner and describing him as “a deranged person” who was “very bad for our country.”
“That corroded brain is in charge of our lives,” Kimmel said. He added that people who supported Trump should reconsider their choice, saying, “It’s perfectly fine.”
Kimmel also shared that, based on his personal interactions with Reiner, the filmmaker would have wanted people to continue calling out what he described as Trump’s “loathsome atrocities.” “So we’re going to do that over and over again until the rest of us wake up,” he said.
Rob Reiner, a legendary filmmaker and actor, was found stabbed to death on Sunday afternoon at his Brentwood home along with his wife of 36 years, Michele Singer. Reiner was 78, and Singer was 68. Reiner rose to fame as an actor on All in the Family before becoming one of Hollywood’s most respected directors, known for classics such as Stand by Me, When Harry Met Sally…, This Is Spinal Tap, and A Few Good Men.
Their son, Nick Reiner, was arrested Sunday night and booked early Monday morning on suspicion of murdering his parents, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department records. LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell confirmed that Nick Reiner had been booked for murder, calling the case a “very, very tragic incident.” Authorities said charges have not yet been filed, and investigators are expected to submit the case to the district attorney for review.
