The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are producing a film adaptation of The Wedding Date, based on the popular novel by Jasmine Guillory. The project is being developed through their company, Archewell Productions, as part of their expanded partnership with Netflix.
The news was first reported by Deadline in December 2025 and comes months after the couple confirmed they had extended their relationship with Netflix. Their new deal is a multi-year, first-look agreement that covers both film and television projects.
So far, Meghan and Harry have focused mainly on documentaries for the streamer, including their widely watched 2022 docuseries Harry & Meghan. The Wedding Date will be one of their first major scripted films to move forward.
What the movie is about
While full plot details for the film haven’t been released, the movie is expected to closely follow Guillory’s novel. The romantic comedy centers on Alexa Monroe, who agrees to attend a wedding with Drew Nichols, a man she meets by chance in an elevator. What starts as a fake date slowly turns into something more, testing whether their connection can last beyond the weekend.
The Wedding Date is the first book in Guillory’s six-novel Wedding Date series, which has built a strong fan base since its release.
Who’s writing the adaptation
Screenwriter Tracy Oliver has signed on to adapt the novel. Oliver made history with the 2017 hit Girls Trip, which became the first movie written by a Black woman to gross over $100 million worldwide.
Her other credits include Little, The Sun Is Also a Star, and The Blackening, along with TV work on First Wives Club and Harlem.
Meghan Markle’s return to Hollywood
Before becoming a working royal, Meghan built her career as an actress, most notably starring for seven seasons on Suits. In late 2025, she made a brief return to acting with a cameo appearance as herself in the Amazon MGM Studios film Close Personal Friends. However, she is not expected to appear on screen in The Wedding Date.
What’s next
A release date has not yet been announced, but the film will stream exclusively on Netflix once completed. The project also follows Archewell’s earlier acquisition of the film rights to Meet Me at the Lake by Carley Fortune.
