Larter, 49, and Randolph, 28, play mother and daughter Angela and Ainsley — a duo that regularly drives Billy Bob Thornton’s character, Tommy, to his breaking point. But behind the scenes, the actresses were forming a close bond as they adjusted to the show’s demanding environment.
According to Larter, the tone on set during season 1 was serious and high-pressure right away. There was no easing into the process and no constant reassurance.
“We were really thrown into the fire,” she explained. “It was a very high-octane set, and there wasn’t a lot of handholding.”
That intensity made their connection even stronger. Larter said having Randolph beside her helped both actresses stay grounded while navigating the fast pace and expectations of the production.
“It was amazing that we had each other to lean on,” she said. “That’s really how our bond formed.”
Larter credited Sheridan’s casting instincts for bringing them together. She praised his ability to pair actors who not only work well onscreen but also connect personally.
“Taylor is masterful at casting,” she said. “I don’t know how he does it, but it just works.”
She also had high praise for Randolph, calling her a talented actress and a genuinely good person.
Larter was equally vocal in defending Sheridan against criticism of the show’s characters and storylines. She described him as a provocateur who intentionally writes characters meant to spark strong reactions.
“What makes his shows special is how original and authentic they are,” she said. “He made oil and the landscape fascinating in a way you’d never expect.”
She added that the show’s wide appeal — across generations and different parts of the world — speaks to Sheridan’s storytelling skill.
Larter also shared warm words about her longtime co-star Billy Bob Thornton, calling him one of the best actors working today.
“He brings out the best in me,” she said. “There’s never an inauthentic moment when we’re working together. I love him so much.”
