Kate Beckinsale Slams Body-Shaming Trolls, Says Grief Over Her Mother’s Death Has Affected Her Health

Kate Beckinsale is speaking out after facing cruel online comments about her recent weight loss, saying the criticism comes at a time when she is still deeply grieving the loss of her mother.

The British actress shared that 2025 has been one of the hardest years of her life. In July, she buried her mother, Judy Loe, who died after a battle with cancer. Just one year earlier, Beckinsale also lost her stepfather. Those back-to-back deaths, combined with the childhood loss of her biological father, have taken a serious toll on her emotionally and physically.

According to Beckinsale, the grief has affected her appetite and overall health. She explained that the intense shock and trauma of watching loved ones suffer and die can shut the body down in unexpected ways.

“Such an incredible amount of suffering doesn’t make you feel very hungry,” she said, adding that grief can leave a person feeling numb rather than focused on eating or appearances.

Beckinsale did not hold back when addressing the people who criticized her body. She said she was raised to never comment on someone’s appearance when they are clearly suffering, and she expressed disappointment that others do not share that basic compassion.

She described the painful experiences of caring for her parents during their final moments and said those moments shaped who she is today. Rather than making her bitter or cruel, she believes they reinforced her values.

“I absolutely refuse to become like that,” Beckinsale said, referring to the online trolls. She added that if the legacy her parents left her is kindness and empathy, she is deeply proud of it.

Her message struck a powerful chord, reminding many that behind public images are real people dealing with real loss — and that empathy costs nothing.
