Taking to her Instagram Stories on December 16, Abrams shared a photo of a lit candle and spoke about the wave of tragedies that have unfolded in recent days. She expressed deep sorrow over the mass shooting in Bondi Beach, Australia, and another shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, both of which occurred over the weekend.
“I am beyond heartbroken for the victims at Bondi,” Abrams wrote. “Devastated for their families during the holiday, a time meant for gathering and for light.” She added that she felt “sick inside” for the victims and students affected at Brown University, asking, “What are we talking about?”
Abrams also addressed the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, describing the situation as “beyond the pale.” She highlighted the harsh living conditions faced by Palestinians, writing about “earthshattering pain” and families forced to live under tarps amid wind, rain, and mud.
The musician then turned her attention to the tragic deaths of legendary filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, producer Michele Singer Reiner, who were found dead in their Los Angeles home on December 14. Authorities later said the case was being investigated as an apparent homicide, with reports suggesting the couple suffered knife wounds. On Monday, their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, was arrested and held on $4 million bail.
Abrams reacted angrily to a social media post made by Trump following the deaths. In the post, Trump mocked Rob Reiner, blaming his death on what he called “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” Abrams condemned the remarks, writing: “Within 24 hours of the most unimaginable tragedy a family can endure, we see the President yet again reveal the most poisonous and vile narcissism maybe in the history of humanity. Indefensible.”
She concluded her message by reflecting on the growing sense of global pain. “It is getting harder to find the words to describe the pain in the world,” Abrams wrote. “I am lighting a candle for everybody who is hurting.”
Trump’s comments have sparked widespread backlash across the entertainment industry. Jack White labelled the President a “disgusting, vile, egomaniac loser, child,” while late-night host Jimmy Kimmel criticised the remarks on his show, saying Trump “always finds a way to go lower.” Actor Josh Gad called Trump a “fucking psychopath,” and on The View, Whoopi Goldberg urged her co-hosts not to read the comments aloud on air.
In related news, Abrams has been increasingly vocal about political and social issues. In October, she joined more than 550 musicians, actors, directors, and writers in reviving the Committee for the First Amendment, a group originally formed in the 1940s to oppose the suppression of free speech.
