According to industry scooper Daniel Richtman, work on the third Five Nights at Freddy’s film has reportedly begun behind the scenes, with filming expected to start in late summer or mid-2026. While Blumhouse has not officially confirmed the project yet, the rumor has reignited excitement among fans of the hit horror franchise.
The possibility of a third film largely depends on the performance of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. Both series star Matthew Lillard and Blumhouse founder Jason Blum have openly said that the future of the franchise hinges on the sequel’s box office success.
Earlier reports also suggested an accelerated timeline. Richtman previously claimed on his Patreon that filming could begin by the end of 2025. Before that, a now-deleted post from X user @Katsterlingfan, citing a source, stated that production would start six months after the release of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, with a planned theatrical release in 2027.
Adding fuel to the speculation, Richtman reported last year that Blumhouse intended to expand the franchise “beyond a trilogy,” suggesting long-term plans for the horror series.
Although Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 remains unconfirmed, both Blum and Lillard have teased its potential. During the Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 panel at San Diego Comic-Con in July, they made it clear that audience support will decide the film’s fate.
“If it’s a hit, they’re gonna make a third movie, and if they make a third movie, I get to kill Mike Schmidt,” Lillard joked, referring to Josh Hutcherson’s character. “It’s going to be cinematic magic.”
Blum echoed the sentiment, saying, “If enough people go… we’d be very excited to make a Five Nights at Freddy’s 3.”
For now, fans will have to wait for official confirmation. Still, with strong interest and growing rumors, the future of Freddy Fazbear on the big screen looks promising.
