Whoopi Goldberg Says She’s Happy Single: “I Don’t Want Somebody in My House”

Legendary actress and TV host Whoopi Goldberg is once again making it clear that she’s perfectly happy living life on her own terms.

In a new interview with Interview magazine, the 70-year-old EGOT winner spoke openly about why marriage and long-term cohabitation aren’t for her. Talking with Tony-nominated playwright Jeremy O. Harris, Goldberg didn’t mince words when the topic turned to relationships.

“I don’t give a f--- what you want,” she said, explaining why she values independence so deeply.

Goldberg made an important distinction between being lonely and being alone. According to her, the two are very different things. “Being lonely and being alone are two different things,” she said, adding that she doesn’t feel lonely because she’s surrounded by people who care about her.

She also pointed out that society often pressures people to believe they need to be in a couple to be happy. “We’ve been taught that there’s something wrong with you if you’re not a pair,” she said. “But sometimes you just want to be by yourself.”

Using a relatable example, the Ghost star joked about simple pleasures like eating alone. Sometimes, she said, you just want pasta and a glass of wine without worrying about anyone else’s preferences.

Goldberg has been married three times and has had several high-profile relationships in the past, including romances with actors Ted Danson and Frank Langella. Still, she has consistently said that marriage isn’t right for her.

Back in 2016, she told The New York Times that she doesn’t want to live with a partner. “I’m much happier on my own,” she said at the time. “I don’t want somebody in my house.”

Today, her focus is firmly on family. Goldberg said she puts her energy into her daughter, son-in-law, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren. “I have enough to think about with my family and all the people at work,” she explained.

Professionally, Goldberg shows no signs of slowing down. She continues to make headlines as a longtime cohost on The View, while also acting in films and television. Her recent and upcoming projects include Ezra, a cameo in the 2023 remake of The Color Purple, and roles in series like Harlem, The Stand, and Anansi Boys.

For Whoopi Goldberg, happiness doesn’t come from fitting into traditional relationship expectations. Instead, it comes from independence, family, and doing exactly what she wants — including enjoying pasta alone if she feels like it.
