The man, who identified himself only as Carlos, said he was stunned when FBI agents and deputies from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department stopped him Tuesday evening in Rio Rico, Arizona — about 60 miles south of Tucson. He told reporters he didn’t even know who Nancy Guthrie was until law enforcement confronted him.
According to Carlos, he noticed police vehicles following him as he drove near his home and decided to pull over on his own. He said authorities quickly detained him and questioned him for hours about where he had been in recent days.
“I’m not the kidnapper,” he told reporters, adding that he feels like he was “kidnapped” himself during the ordeal.
Carlos, who works for DoorDash and GLS, said investigators also raided his home earlier in the day. He criticized officers for breaking down his front door and damaging his garage door while executing what officials later confirmed was a court-authorized search warrant. He said nothing related to the case was found and that he wants to clear his name.
His mother-in-law also spoke publicly, saying law enforcement searched the house after receiving a tip that Nancy was there. She said she had never heard of Nancy before the search and willingly allowed officers to look through the home. Authorities reportedly found nothing.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that deputies conducted a court-approved search at a residence roughly 15 miles from the Port of Nogales, a major U.S.-Mexico border crossing.
Earlier Tuesday, the FBI released images and video of the suspected kidnapper captured on a Nest doorbell camera. The footage shows a masked individual standing at Nancy’s front door.
Nancy Guthrie was reported missing on Sunday, February 1, just hours after her family dropped her off at home following dinner the night before with her daughter, Annie Guthrie, and Annie’s husband, Tommaso Cioni. Family members say Nancy is in poor health and depends on daily medication.
Investigators have not announced any arrests in the case, and Nancy’s whereabouts remain unknown. Authorities continue to urge anyone with information to come forward as the search continues.
