The former One Direction singer opened up during a candid chat with podcast host Alex Cooper on “Call Her Daddy.” When asked whether he still agrees with a comment he made two years ago — that he didn’t think he’d ever experienced real love — Zayn calmly confirmed he does.
He explained that his understanding of love has changed over time.
“At that moment in time, I might have thought it was love,” Zayn said. “But as I got older, I realized maybe it wasn’t. Maybe it was lust. Maybe it was this… maybe it was that… I don’t feel like it was love.”
His comments are especially notable given his high-profile relationship with supermodel Gigi Hadid. The two dated on and off for years and welcomed their daughter, Khai, in September 2020.
While Zayn said he’s unsure if he was ever in love with Gigi, he made it clear he still cares deeply about her.
“I will always love G, because she’s the reason my child is on this Earth,” he said. “And I have the utmost respect for her. I will always love her, but I don’t know if I was ever in love with her.”
Zayn and Gigi split in 2021 following a messy breakup that made headlines. Gigi’s mother, Yolanda Hadid, accused Zayn of striking her during an argument. Zayn denied the allegations but later pleaded no contest to harassment charges and agreed to probation and anger management.
Despite the drama, the former couple now appear to be on better terms, focusing on co-parenting their daughter.
Zayn’s honest comments show he’s still figuring things out when it comes to love — and isn’t afraid to admit it.
