Academy Award winners Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are officially returning for a fourth installment of the blockbuster The Mummy franchise. Universal Pictures has set the film for a wide theatrical release on May 19, 2028.
Fraser and Weisz have finalized deals to reprise their iconic roles as adventurer Rick O’Connell and Egyptologist Evelyn O’Connell. While plot details are being kept tightly under wraps, the reunion alone is already enough to spark excitement among longtime fans.
The franchise began in 1999 with the action-adventure hit that followed a treasure hunter who accidentally awakens a cursed Egyptian priest with terrifying supernatural powers. The film — along with its hugely successful sequel The Mummy Returns — became a box office sensation and helped cement Fraser as a leading action star of the era.
Weisz famously did not appear in the 2008 third film The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, making her return especially meaningful for fans who have long wanted to see Rick and Evelyn back together on screen.
The new movie will be directed by Radio Silence filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, best known for Ready or Not and its upcoming sequel Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. The screenplay is written by David Coggeshall, whose recent work includes The Family Plan and Orphan: First Kill.
Longtime franchise producer Sean Daniel is also returning. He has been involved with every major installment of the series, which has earned more than $1.8 billion worldwide and includes spinoffs like The Scorpion King and the 2017 reboot attempt The Mummy.
Additional producers include William Sherak, James Vanderbilt and Paul Neinstein through Project X Entertainment. Fraser will also serve as an executive producer, alongside Jason F. Brown and Denis Stewart.
At the studio level, executive VP Jay Polidoro and director of production development Jacqueline Garell will oversee the project.
After years of false starts and reboots, The Mummy is finally returning to what fans loved most — classic adventure, big spectacle, and the chemistry between Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. If all goes as planned, the sands of time will shift once again in 2028. 🏺✨
