In a recent interview with Charli XCX for Complex, Robbie recalled that a male co-star once gave her the book French Women Don't Get Fat, a move she took as a clear message to lose weight.
“He essentially gave me a book to let me know that I should lose weight,” Robbie said, adding that the moment was shocking and insulting.
The book, written by Mireille Guiliano, was published in 2007 — the same year Robbie began landing her first professional acting roles. Her profile rose with TV series Pan Am and the 2013 hit The Wolf of Wall Street, opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.
Robbie has since become one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, appearing in films like Suicide Squad, I, Tonya, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Bombshell, and Barbie.
Her next role is Catherine in Wuthering Heights, a new adaptation directed by Emerald Fennell. Robbie stars opposite Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff.
Robbie has praised Elordi’s performance, calling him “our generation’s Daniel Day-Lewis.” Fennell has also spoken highly of Robbie, saying the role required someone with her rare star power.
The film arrives in theaters on Feb. 13, alongside a soundtrack by Charli XCX.
