Police Had Responded to Welfare Checks at Rob Reiner’s Home Years Before Fatal Killings

Police had previously responded to welfare-related calls at the Los Angeles home of filmmaker Rob Reiner years before he and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found killed at the residence, according to police records.

The couple’s son, Nick Reiner, who lived on the property, has since been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with their deaths.

Records show that officers from the Los Angeles Police Department went to the family’s Brentwood home twice in 2019. The first visit happened on Feb. 25, when police responded to a call logged as a welfare check. Officers arrived that night, completed the call, and reported the incident to a supervisor.

Several months later, on Sept. 27, police returned to the same address for a call described as mental health–related. Officers later noted that they found “no indication of mental illness” at that time. The records do not identify who made either call or who the calls were about.

The earlier police responses were first reported by the Daily Mail.

Nick Reiner, now 32, has reportedly been treated for schizophrenia. Prosecutors allege that Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, were killed inside their home during the early morning hours of Sunday, Dec. 14. Three days later, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that both died from multiple sharp-force injuries and ruled the deaths homicides.

Authorities arrested Nick about six hours after the bodies were discovered. He was taken into custody near the University of Southern California and remains jailed without bail. His arraignment is scheduled for Jan. 7, 2026. Investigators have not publicly identified a motive.

The night before the killings, Rob and Nick were reportedly involved in a “very loud argument” at a party hosted by Conan O’Brien, according to sources.

Nick has previously spoken about long struggles with addiction and periods of homelessness that began when he was a teenager. A source close to the family said Rob and Michele tried to help their son in many ways but felt overwhelmed by the depth of his challenges.

Rob and Michele married in 1989 after meeting while he was directing When Harry Met Sally.... They shared three children together: Nick, Jake, and Romy. Rob was also the adoptive father of Tracy from his earlier marriage to Penny Marshall.

In a statement released on Dec. 17, Jake and Romy said the deaths of their parents had caused “unimaginable pain” and asked for privacy as they grieve.

Rob Reiner was widely known for directing classic films such as This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, Misery and A Few Good Men.
