Henry Winkler Says Retirement Is “The Furthest Thing” From His Mind at 80

With a career that has lasted more than five decades, Henry Winkler shows no signs of slowing down.

The two-time Golden Globe winner says he is still very busy and has no plans to retire, even at 80 years old. Speaking on the IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson podcast, Winkler shared that he continues to work on several projects at the same time.

“I’m very grateful,” he said. “People keep asking me if I’m going to retire or if I already have. That idea is the furthest thing from my imagination.”

Winkler explained that acting keeps him alive and engaged. Thinking about retirement, he added, “I just think that it is deadly.”

Among his current projects is the Hazardous History series on the History Channel, which he says is just one of the many jobs keeping him busy.

His recent success also proves that his career still has strong momentum. Winkler won his first Primetime Emmy Award in 2018 for his role on Barry, followed by three more Emmy nominations for the HBO series.

Fans will soon see him on the big screen again in Normal, directed by Ben Wheatley. The film also stars Bob Odenkirk and Lena Headey, and is set for release by Magnolia Pictures on April 17.

Outside of acting, Winkler continues to write children’s books with longtime partner Lynn Oliver. In May 2025, the duo released their 40th book together, Detective Duck: The Mystery at Emerald Pond.

After more than 50 years in entertainment, Winkler makes one thing clear: as long as he is able to act, he plans to keep going.
