Edie Falco Praises James Cameron as ‘Astonishing’ While Promoting Avatar: Fire and Ash

Edie Falco is enjoying every moment of working on and promoting Avatar: Fire and Ash.

The 62-year-old actress, who plays the antagonist General Ardmore in the Avatar film series, recently spoke with PEOPLE about being part of director James Cameron’s expansive sci-fi world.

“It’s another whole world,” Falco said while attending the Mayor of Kingstown season 4 screening in New York City. She added that being included in Cameron’s vision feels special. “It’s kind of a great honor to be part of the stuff that James Cameron imagines and makes happen. He’s quite astonishing.”

Falco praised Cameron for constantly pushing boundaries in filmmaking. She said he invents new machines and new ways of shooting scenes, and she feels lucky to be invited into that creative process.

Talking about working with the director, Falco described Cameron’s energy as refreshing. “He’s like a little kid,” she explained. “He has all kinds of ideas and curiosity, and he has the excitement of someone just starting out. That was really refreshing to see.”

While much of the film’s story is being kept secret, Cameron has shared a few hints about what audiences can expect. He revealed that the new movie will explore a darker side of Pandora through a new Na’vi group known as the Ash People. Unlike earlier films that mostly showed the Na’vi in a positive light, this installment will flip expectations.

Cameron has also said the film will introduce two completely new cultures and travel more widely across Pandora, showing parts of the world fans haven’t seen before. Fire plays an important symbolic role in the story, tied closely to these new groups.

Avatar: Fire and Ash features a returning cast that includes Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, and Stephen Lang, along with new faces. Oona Chaplin joins the franchise as Varang, the leader of the Ash People, described as a fierce and volcanic Na’vi group.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is now playing in theaters.
