Anna Delvey Says She Still Has No Interest in Watching Inventing Anna

Anna Delvey says she still hasn’t watched Inventing Anna — and doesn’t plan to anytime soon.

In a new interview on The Hidden Third podcast with Mariana van Zeller, Delvey said she has little interest in seeing the Netflix series that dramatized her rise and fall as a fake German heiress. The show stars Julia Garner as Delvey and premiered in 2022.

“I still have not watched it,” Delvey said. “I watched the clips that were out there that are unavoidable, but no. I never watched it. I just found it insufferable.”

Delvey, whose real name is Anna Sorokin, explained that watching a dramatized version of her own life was uncomfortable. She said she briefly tried to start the series but stopped. “It was not a comfortable experience. And I never had a reason to,” she said.

Another reason she missed the show’s release was timing. When Inventing Anna debuted, Delvey was incarcerated and did not have access to watch it. By the time she was released, months had passed. “I’m like, ‘Why would I do this?’” she said.

Garner received an Emmy nomination for her portrayal, but Delvey said she couldn’t fairly judge the performance. She did, however, comment on the accent. “I don’t think my accent is this over-exaggerated,” she said, adding that she knows her opinion is biased.

The series also portrayed Delvey as a teenager making fashion collages, something she said did not reflect her real childhood. “I was not much of a collager,” she said. “We had internet and computer. I had digital albums.”

Delvey confirmed that Netflix paid her for the rights to adapt her story. She said the total was about $320,000, but the money was paid in stages as the project moved through development. “It was never certain it was going to happen,” she explained.

Delvey was convicted in April 2019 of attempted grand larceny, second-degree larceny, and theft of services. She was sentenced to four to 12 years in prison and was released on parole in February 2021 after serving 19 months.

Six weeks later, she was taken into custody by ICE for overstaying her visa. Delvey remained jailed until October 2022, when she was released on bail under house arrest in New York City. In August 2024, the restrictions were expanded to a 75-mile radius, allowing her to compete on Dancing With the Stars.
