Simu Liu Says Robert Downey Jr.’s Massive ‘Downey Land’ Took Over the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Set

Simu Liu is giving fans a fun behind-the-scenes look at life on the set of Avengers: Doomsday, and it turns out one of the biggest attractions wasn’t a superhero suit or a stunt sequence — it was Robert Downey Jr. himself.

In a new interview with Collider, Liu revealed that Downey had a full “convoy of trailers” during filming, an area so impressive that cast and crew jokingly nicknamed it “Downey Land.” The Marvel veteran is making his return to the franchise not as Iron Man, but as the villain Doctor Doom — a move that has already become one of the most talked-about parts of the upcoming movie.

“Downey famously has this convoy of trailers and this whole area in base camp that we affectionately called Downey Land,” Liu said. When he first visited, he walked into a tent filled with Andy Warhol–style artwork — except every piece featured Downey himself. “He’s so self-aware,” Liu added.

The luxury didn’t stop at the décor. Liu said Downey Land had its own personal chefs. When Liu showed up with his regular set lunch, Downey quickly shut that down.

“He was like, ‘Oh, no, no, no. We don’t do that here,’” Liu recalled. Moments later, chefs laid out a full buffet. As other stars passed through, Liu couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed. “I was like, ‘I cannot believe I’m having lunch with these people.’”

Liu reprises his role as Shang-Chi in the film, which features a massive ensemble cast. Alongside longtime Marvel faces like Chris Hemsworth, Florence Pugh, and Tom Hiddleston, the movie also brings back X-Men legends including Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, while welcoming newer MCU favorites like Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby.

With so many stars on set, Liu admitted it took real effort to stay focused.

“For me, it was very imperative that I put that fan side away,” he said. “I was like, ‘I have a job to do.’ The worst thing I can do right now is be a fan. I’m not a fan. I’m a coworker.”

Even so, Liu joked that inside, he still felt like an excited kid sharing scenes with actors he grew up watching.

“Avengers: Doomsday” is set to hit theaters on Dec. 18, marking Downey’s highly anticipated return to Marvel — and proving that, villain or not, he still knows how to steal the spotlight.
