According to documents dated Tuesday, Dec. 23, Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, died from “multiple sharp force injuries.” The deaths were caused “with a knife, by another,” and the time between the injuries and death was listed as only “minutes.”
The certificates state that Rob was discovered first at approximately 3:45 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14. Michele, listed as “widowed” on her certificate, was found one minute later at 3:46 p.m. Both were later cremated.
Their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, has been arrested in connection with the deaths and is facing two counts of first-degree murder. He is currently being held without bail. Nick made a brief court appearance on Dec. 17 but has not yet entered a plea. Multiple reports have stated that he had been receiving treatment for schizophrenia prior to the killings.
Rob and Michele met while he was directing When Harry Met Sally, and the couple married in 1989. They shared three children together: Nick, Romy, and Jake. Rob also adopted his daughter Tracy from his first marriage to actress Penny Marshall.
A memorial service honoring Rob and Michele will be announced at a later date, according to a spokesperson for their children Romy and Jake.
In a statement released on Dec. 17, Jake and Romy described their grief in deeply emotional terms. “Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” they said. “The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience.”
“They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends,” the statement continued. The siblings also thanked the public for its support, adding, “We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave.”
