The hit sci-fi series from Vince Gilligan, best known as the creator of Breaking Bad, has officially started work on a second season — but there’s no rush to get it on screen.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Gilligan explained that careful storytelling is more important to him than speed. “We’re working on it,” he said. “It takes us a while. I would love to go faster if I could.”
Executive producer Gordon Smith echoed that sentiment, joking that the show’s progress feels like an arrow on a timeline pointing toward infinity — and they’re still somewhere along that arrow.
Pluribus stars Rhea Seehorn as a romantasy author who finds herself battling an alien “virus” that transforms humanity into a single, peaceful hive mind. The series wrapped its first season on December 24 and quickly became a major success.
Earlier this month, the show was named Apple TV’s most-watched series, a milestone that Gilligan admitted surprised him. “It amazed me,” he said. “I feel very fortunate that people are responding so favorably to this show.”
Fellow executive producer Alison Tatlock added that the response has been deeply rewarding. “It’s just so gratifying that so many people are along for the ride,” she said.
Despite its popularity, the creative team is not letting fan excitement dictate their pace. There is currently no filming date set for season 2, and Gilligan made it clear that outside reactions won’t change how the story is told.
“As grateful as I am for the fans, we’ve always found our best way to proceed is to be in our bunker creating this thing and not pay too much attention to reactions — positive or negative,” he said. “We’re kind of the first fans of this show, and we try to make ourselves happy first.”
Gilligan believes that staying true to that approach is key. “The way to tell a story is to keep doing it the way you did it back before you had an audience,” he explained. “That has always worked best for us.”
For now, all episodes of season 1 of Pluribus are streaming on Apple TV, giving fans plenty of time to rewatch — while waiting for the next chapter to arrive.
