At a recent performance of Drew Droege’s Messy White Gays, LuPone was in the audience enjoying the show when another attendee became increasingly disruptive. According to an insider, the woman appeared “more primed for a bachelorette party than off-Broadway,” making loud remarks throughout the performance.
Witnesses say the guest shouted frequent comments, including an enthusiastic “Yes b*tch!” along with what was described as “an inebriated cavalcade of four-letter words.” Unsurprisingly, fellow audience members were not amused — and neither was LuPone.
After the show ended, LuPone reportedly confronted the woman directly. The Broadway icon is said to have “cornered” her and firmly ordered, “Never go to the theater again!” Those present claimed the woman was visibly shaken, “quailing under the diva’s stony gaze” before apologizing.
This is hardly the first time LuPone has taken theater etiquette into her own hands. Over the years, she has repeatedly called out disruptive patrons and has even been known to snatch phones from audience members during performances.
Following one such incident in the past, LuPone openly expressed her frustration with modern theater behavior. “It isn’t changing, it’s only getting worse,” she said at the time. “It’s stressful. It’s incredibly stressful. So, I will think twice before I sign another Broadway contract. I really will.”
While some stars might ignore unruly behavior, Patti LuPone continues to stand firm — making it clear that when it comes to live theater, respect is not optional.
