Johan Renck, the Emmy-winning filmmaker best known for HBO’s Chernobyl, is set to direct the series for Netflix. The news gives the project a serious prestige boost as it moves closer to production.
The show has already begun assembling its core cast. Toby Wallace and Lola Petticrew will lead the series, with Zachary Hart and Laura Marcus joining as regulars.
First announced in July, the series is the first TV project to come out of Netflix’s 2020 partnership with Ubisoft. While story details are still being kept quiet, the official description promises a globe-spanning, time-hopping thriller about a secret war between two powerful factions — one trying to control humanity’s future, and the other fighting to protect free will.
Behind the scenes, Roberto Patino and David Wiener are serving as creators, showrunners, and executive producers. They’re joined by a team from Ubisoft Film & Television, helping ensure the adaptation stays true to the spirit of the games.
The “Assassin’s Creed” franchise began in 2007 and quickly became one of the most successful series in gaming history. Since then, it has grown to more than a dozen mainline titles, selling over 230 million copies worldwide. The most recent game, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, was released in 2025. A previous film adaptation starring Michael Fassbender hit theaters in 2016.
Renck brings deep TV experience to the project beyond Chernobyl. His résumé includes episodes of Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Vikings, and Bates Motel. He has also worked with Netflix before, directing early episodes of Bloodline and the 2024 sci-fi film Spaceman, starring Adam Sandler.
In a candid interview last year, Renck joked that after the massive success of Chernobyl — which swept major awards including Emmys, Golden Globes, and BAFTAs — he briefly considered quitting directing altogether to open a “really cool” restaurant in Brooklyn. Instead, he’s now stepping into one of Netflix’s most ambitious adaptations yet.
With Renck at the helm and a rising cast in place, Netflix’s “Assassin’s Creed” series is shaping up to be one of the streamer’s most closely watched projects in development.
