Speaking in London, Black — who voices Bowser — revealed that while he’s sworn to secrecy, longtime Mario fans will be rewarded. He teased that the sequel is packed with Easter eggs and said anyone who loves the Mario universe will be “very pleased” with how it has been brought to the big screen.
The sequel takes major inspiration from Super Mario Galaxy, the critically acclaimed 2007 Wii title. That game is often ranked among the greatest Mario entries ever, which has only added to fan excitement. Early footage also suggests the movie borrows ideas from Super Mario Odyssey and Super Mario Wonder, blending multiple eras of Mario into one cinematic adventure.
Black is no stranger to gaming culture. Beyond Bowser, he’s voiced characters in games like Brütal Legend, and even ran a gaming-focused YouTube channel for a time. His passion for games adds credibility to his enthusiasm for the sequel.
The film once again stars Chris Pratt as Mario, alongside Black’s fire-breathing Bowser. The cast is expanding in a big way this time, with Brie Larson joining as Princess Rosalina, described as a “cosmic protector.” Also on board is Benny Safdie, who will voice Bowser Jr., Bowser’s mischievous son.
One notable absence so far is Yoshi. Although the character was teased in the post-credits scene of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, there has been no official confirmation of his role in the sequel. Fans have only spotted him through leaked promotional items, keeping speculation alive.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set to open in theaters on April 3, 2026. If Black’s comments are any indication, Mario fans should expect a film that celebrates the games’ legacy while delivering plenty of surprises along the way.
