Ellen DeGeneres Returns to Her Signature Blonde After a Year of Going Gray

Ellen DeGeneres is back to blonde.

The 67-year-old former talk show host was spotted on Saturday, Dec. 27, in Montecito, California, alongside her wife Portia de Rossi. During the outing, DeGeneres appeared to have ditched her darker hair in favor of the icy platinum blonde look she famously wore for decades.

DeGeneres kept things casual with a shaggy haircut and an easygoing outfit: a white T-shirt, dark jeans, an olive-green cropped jacket, and white sneakers. The look marked a noticeable shift from the graying and darker styles she’s been seen with over the past year.

The change comes after a period of major lifestyle shifts for the comedian. In November 2024, DeGeneres and de Rossi relocated to the English countryside following the U.S. presidential election. The couple settled in the celebrity-favorite Cotswolds region after DeGeneres reportedly fell in love with a house she found while visiting England in early October.

“Ellen was in England house hunting in the beginning of October,” a source said at the time. “She ended up finding a house that she loved and purchased it shortly after.”

Soon after the move, fans noticed DeGeneres debuting a shorter, darker hairstyle. In a Nov. 13, 2024, Instagram post from a British pub, she appeared alongside de Rossi and friends during an intimate live music performance by singer Natalie Imbruglia. Instead of her usual blonde, DeGeneres was rocking a deeper, more natural shade.

When DeGeneres returned to Montecito in January 2025, she was seen with visibly graying hair. Fans got another close look at the darker tone in a May 4, 2025, Instagram video that showed her riding a lawn mower while cutting the grass at what appeared to be her U.K. home.

The hair changes mirror a broader shift in DeGeneres’ life after stepping away from daytime television. Her long-running series, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, ended in May 2022 after 19 seasons. The show wrapped up following toxic workplace allegations made against the host in 2020.

In her July 2024 Netflix comedy special, Ellen’s Last Stand…Up, DeGeneres addressed the controversy head-on and confirmed she was done with show business.

“Let me catch you up on what’s been going on with me since you last saw me,” she joked during the special. “I got chickens. Oh yeah, and I got kicked out of show business for being mean.”

She later made her position clear, adding, “This is the last time you’re going to see me. After my Netflix special, I’m done.”

Now, with her return to blonde and a quieter life split between California and the English countryside, DeGeneres appears to be embracing a fresh chapter—on her own terms.
