The British government has officially unveiled the latest UK Honours List, and the two global stars are among more than 1,100 people recognized for their contributions to the country. The announcement was made under the reign of King Charles III, with honors approved by Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government.
Elba, who stars in Apple TV+ thriller Hijack, has been made a Knight of the Realm. From now on, he will be known as Sir Idris Elba.
While Elba is famous worldwide for roles in The Wire, Luther, and major Hollywood films — not to mention his DJ career — this honor wasn’t awarded for acting. Instead, Elba was knighted for his “services to young people,” specifically through his work with the Elba Hope Foundation. The foundation focuses on community empowerment, education, youth advocacy, and sustainable development. Elba had already received an OBE in the past, making this a major step up in royal recognition.
Cynthia Erivo, meanwhile, received an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for her “services to music and drama.” The award comes during a standout year for the performer, who earned widespread acclaim for her role in the film adaptation of Wicked and is widely expected to be a major awards contender.
“This year’s honours list celebrates the very best of Britain,” Starmer said in a statement. “People who put the common good ahead of themselves to strengthen communities and change lives.”
The list also included several well-known figures from British culture and entertainment. Former BBC content chief Charlotte Moore was recognized following her move to Sony. Comedy legend Meera Syal was made a dame for services to literature, drama, and charity, while Last of the Summer Wine creator Roy Clarke also received an honor.
TV presenter and author Richard Osman earned an OBE for services to literature and broadcasting, thanks in part to the success of The Thursday Murder Club, now adapted into a Netflix film. Olympic ice-skating icons Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean were named dame and knight respectively for their charity work.
There were also major honors for England’s women’s football team following their Euros victory, including an honorary damehood for head coach Sarina Wiegman.
Formal investiture ceremonies — complete with royal settings and traditional protocols — are expected to take place later in 2026 at one of the UK’s royal residences.
For Elba and Erivo, it marks a powerful moment: global success paired with recognition at home, and a reminder that impact off-screen can matter just as much as what happens on it.
