The crash happened Monday on the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway, one of Nigeria’s busiest highways. Police said Joshua was taken to a hospital and suffered only minor injuries. Officials added that he is doing “fine.”
Graphic and unverified videos showing the aftermath of the crash spread quickly on social media, but authorities have not confirmed details from those clips.
Joshua, a former world heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medallist, was born in Watford, England, to British Nigerian parents. He was recently in the spotlight after an exhibition bout against YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul.
Joshua knocked Paul out in the sixth round. Paul was later hospitalized with a broken jaw. The fight was promoted by Paul’s company and streamed on Netflix, marking Paul’s second live boxing event on the service after his high-profile matchup with Mike Tyson.
According to Netflix, the Paul–Joshua fight drew 10.9 million views, placing it third for the week. That number was well below the audience for the Tyson fight, which pulled in 46.6 million views and ranked No. 1 in 78 countries.
Paul had been scheduled to fight Gervonta Davis next, but that bout was canceled amid a civil lawsuit involving Davis.
For now, Joshua’s team has not announced any changes to his plans. Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash as fans around the world send well wishes to the boxer.
