The 67-year-old actor shared the news in a post on X, describing his condition as “treatable” but “not curable.” He did not disclose the specific type of cancer.
“These days, when someone is having a health issue, it’s referred to as an ‘opportunity,’ so let’s go with that — I’m having one of those,” Campbell wrote. “It’s also called a type of cancer that’s ‘treatable’ not ‘curable.’ I apologize if that’s a shock — it was to me too.”
Campbell said he chose to go public to prevent misinformation and to explain changes to his professional schedule. He confirmed that he will cancel several fan conventions and public appearances scheduled for summer 2026.
“Treatment needs and professional obligations don’t always go hand-in-hand,” he wrote. “I’m not trying to enlist sympathy — or advice — I just want to get ahead of this information in case false information gets out.”
Despite the diagnosis, Campbell struck an optimistic tone.
“Fear not, I am a tough old son-of-a-bitch and I have great support, so I expect to be around a while,” he added, sending “much love” to fans.
Focus on Ernie & Emma
Campbell said his goal is to recover enough to promote his new film, Ernie & Emma, this fall. The “grief comedy” road-trip movie follows a widowed pear salesman traveling across Oregon to scatter his wife’s ashes according to her detailed instructions.
Campbell wrote, directed, and stars in the film. It had a limited theatrical premiere in February 2026. The cast includes longtime collaborator Ted Raimi, along with Cerina Vincent and Robin McAlpine.
A Four-Decade Legacy as Ash
Campbell is best known for playing Ash Williams in the 1981 cult horror film The Evil Dead. He reprised the role in sequels and the Starz series Ash vs Evil Dead, which aired from 2015 to 2018.
His work in the franchise helped define the “blue-collar” horror hero — a character who survives through grit and ingenuity rather than elite training or superpowers.
In a 2024 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Campbell explained his view of what makes a compelling action hero while criticizing Die Hard.
“You put an accountant in the air vent who’s never fired a gun in his life, but ‘Oh my God, he’s smart!’ Now I’m interested,” he said, adding that Ash’s lack of formal training is what makes the character memorable.
Beyond Evil Dead, Campbell starred as Sam Axe in the USA Network series Burn Notice and appeared in projects including Cars 2. He has also served as executive producer on upcoming installments in the expanding Evil Dead franchise.
Broader Context
According to 2026 estimates from the American Cancer Society and federal registries, approximately 626,140 Americans are expected to die from cancer this year — about 1,720 deaths per day. Cancer remains the second leading cause of death in the United States, after heart disease.
For now, Campbell said his priority is treatment and recovery.
“As always, you’re the greatest fans in the world and I hope to see you soon,” he wrote.
