Jim Carrey Shuts Down Body Double Rumors After César Awards Appearance

Rumors surrounding Jim Carrey’s recent public appearance have been firmly dismissed after speculation swirled online that the actor may have been impersonated at France’s prestigious César Awards.

Carrey, 64, attended the annual ceremony in Paris on Feb. 26, where he received an Honorary César Award recognizing his contributions to film and television. The event marked one of his first major public appearances in months, prompting widespread discussion on social media about his noticeably refreshed look.

Some online users questioned whether the actor had been replaced by a body double, with conspiracy theories circulating on platforms including X and TikTok. Viral posts claimed his facial features appeared different, while prosthetic makeup artist Alexis Stone fueled further chatter by sharing images of a hyper-realistic Jim Carrey mask.

However, officials quickly clarified the situation.

Gregory Caulier, general delegate of the César Awards, told Variety that Carrey’s visit had been carefully planned for months.

“Jim Carrey’s visit has been planned since this summer,” Caulier said. “He was extremely touched by the Academy’s invitation. He worked on his speech in French for months, asking about the exact pronunciation of certain words.”

Carrey delivered his entire acceptance speech in French, honoring his French-Canadian roots. According to Caulier, the actor arrived with close family and friends, including his longtime publicist and filmmaker Michel Gondry, who has collaborated with Carrey on past projects.

Carrey’s representative also confirmed in a March 2 statement that the actor personally attended the ceremony and accepted the award.

A Family Affair

During the ceremony, Carrey was joined by his daughter Jane, 38, her teenage son Jackson, and his partner, Min Ah — marking the first time the couple appeared publicly together.

In his speech, Carrey thanked his family in French.

“Thank you to my wonderful family, my daughter Jane, and my grandson Jackson. I love you now and forever,” he said. “Thank you to my sublime companion, Min Ah.”

He also paid tribute to his late father, Percy Joseph Carrey, crediting him for teaching him the values of love and laughter.

The French Academy had announced Carrey as the 2025 Honorary César recipient last October, praising his “exceptional versatility” across both comedic and dramatic roles.

Online Reaction

Much of the online reaction centered on Carrey’s appearance. He appeared clean-shaven, with shoulder-length dark hair and a smoother complexion compared to recent public outings where he had sported a grey beard.

While some social media users pushed conspiracy theories, others suggested more realistic explanations, including possible cosmetic procedures such as Botox or fillers. Many observers also noted that shaving his beard and changing his hairstyle could significantly alter his look.

Supporters quickly defended the actor, pointing out that his expressions and trademark animated facial movements were unmistakable.

“As soon as he started making his iconic faces, it was undeniably him,” one fan wrote online.

Recent Career and Public Appearances

Before the César Awards, Carrey’s most recent high-profile appearance was in November 2025, when he inducted Soundgarden into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

On the big screen, he last appeared as Dr. Robotnik in the Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise, released in 2020, 2022 and 2024. Although Carrey previously suggested he was considering retirement from acting, he reprised the role for the third installment of the video game adaptation.

At the close of his César Awards speech, Carrey lightened the mood with a joke about his French skills.

“Almost mediocre, right? Forgive me, I didn’t speak French, but I’m just learning it. My tongue is tired,” he quipped, according to a translation.

Despite online speculation, event organizers and his representatives have made it clear: the man on stage in Paris was very much Jim Carrey — simply returning to the spotlight in his own distinctive style.
