Sony Confirms New Spider-Man Universe Reboot With Fresh Cast

Sony Pictures is preparing to reboot its live-action universe of Spider-Man characters.

In a recent appearance on The Town podcast, Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman confirmed that the studio plans to revisit and relaunch its interconnected Marvel universe at some point in the future — this time with new actors and a fresh direction.

When asked whether Sony’s larger Spider-Man universe was “dead,” Rothman answered clearly: “No.” He also confirmed that the next version would be a “fresh reboot” featuring “new people.”

A Reset After Mixed Results

Sony has controlled the theatrical rights to Spider-Man since 1999. The studio first found major success with director Sam Raimi’s trilogy starring Tobey Maguire in the early 2000s.

After rebooting with Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man films, Sony later partnered with Marvel Studios to bring Tom Holland into the Marvel Cinematic Universe starting with Spider-Man: Homecoming.

In 2018, Sony launched its own separate Spider-Man spinoff universe beginning with Venom starring Tom Hardy. While Venom was a box office hit, most of the studio’s later Marvel films struggled with critics and audiences.

Since 2018, Sony released six live-action Marvel movies based on Spider-Man side characters:

• Venom: Let There Be Carnage

• Morbius

• Madame Web

• Venom: The Last Dance

• Kraven the Hunter

None of these films featured Spider-Man himself, and all received negative reviews, with none earning a “fresh” Rotten Tomatoes score.

Interestingly, Sony released three Marvel titles in 2024 alone — more than both DC and Marvel Studios that year. DC released Joker: Folie à Deux, while Marvel Studios released Deadpool & Wolverine.

Rothman addressed superhero fatigue during the podcast, saying, “Scarcity has value. You’ve got to make the audience miss you.” His comments suggest Sony may slow down production before launching its new rebooted universe.

What Happens to the Current Cast?

While nothing has been officially announced, Rothman’s comments strongly suggest that actors like Dakota Johnson (Madame Web), Jared Leto (Morbius), and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kraven the Hunter) are unlikely to return in the rebooted universe.

However, Sony has surprised fans before. The studio famously brought together three generations of Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home, proving that anything is possible.

What’s Next for Spider-Man?

Sony’s next theatrical Spider-Man project is Spider-Man: Brand New Day, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. The film will feature Tom Holland’s Peter Parker alongside Mark Ruffalo as Hulk and Jon Bernthal as Punisher. It is scheduled for release on July 31.

On the television side, Sony is teaming with Amazon MGM on Spider-Noir, a live-action series starring Nicolas Cage as a 1930s version of Spider-Man. Cage previously voiced the character in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but it is unclear how the new series will connect to Sony’s other projects.

A New Chapter for Sony’s Spider-Verse

Sony’s reboot signals a major shift for its Marvel strategy. After mixed critical reception and uneven box office performance, the studio appears ready to start over with new talent and a clearer long-term plan.

For now, fans can expect more details in the coming months as Sony reshapes its Spider-Man universe once again.
