The film is described as a dream-like drama about a married American couple who travel to a small, snowy European town to adopt a baby. As their journey unfolds, the story explores themes of isolation and uncertainty. Veteran actress Patricia Clarkson is also part of the cast.
Mikkelsen will play the role of Brother Emmanuel.
Scorsese will direct and produce the film through his production company, Sikelia Productions. The screenplay has been adapted by Patrick Marber from the novel by Peter Cameron.
The project marks another collaboration between Scorsese, DiCaprio and Apple Original Films following the critically acclaimed Killers of the Flower Moon, which received 10 Academy Award nominations. Lawrence has also worked with Apple on films such as Causeway and Bread & Roses, and she is set to star in and produce the upcoming murder mystery The Wives.
Mikkelsen is widely known for his performances in award-winning films including Another Round, which won the Academy Award for Best International Feature, as well as The Hunt, Casino Royale, Doctor Strange and Riders of Justice. He also gained international recognition for his lead role in the television series Hannibal.
More recently, he appeared in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and The Promised Land. He also voiced Kiros in Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King and starred in Dust Bunny.
Looking ahead, Mikkelsen will appear in the dark comedy The Last Viking and the action thriller Sirius.
Production details and a release date for What Happens at Night have not yet been announced.
