In a lengthy message shared Saturday morning, Trump described the meeting as a “total waste of time” and labeled Maher a “highly overrated LIGHTWEIGHT.” The president also compared the “Real Time” host to other late-night comedians he frequently criticizes, including Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert.
Trump Says Maher Was Nervous at White House Dinner
Trump claimed Maher requested the meeting through a mutual friend and appeared “extremely nervous” when he arrived at the Oval Office. According to Trump, Maher quickly asked for a “Vodka Tonic” and admitted he was scared.
“He was extremely nervous, had ZERO confidence in himself,” Trump wrote, adding that the moment was “somewhat endearing.”
Despite the criticism, Trump acknowledged that Maher was respectful during the first episode of his HBO show, Real Time with Bill Maher, following their dinner.
Hockey Joke Sparks Trump’s Anger
Trump’s post appeared to be partly fueled by Maher mocking his recent claim that China would “terminate ALL Ice Hockey” in Canada if the two nations struck a trade deal.
Trump insisted the comment was clearly a joke and said Maher treated it as if he were serious.
“He went on and on about the Hockey statement, like ‘What kind of a person would say such a foolish thing as this,’ as though I were being serious,” Trump wrote.
The president also criticized Canadian leaders and repeated claims that Canada has taken advantage of the United States on trade.
Trump Slams Maher’s Ratings
In addition to criticizing Maher’s commentary, Trump attacked his television ratings, claiming they are so low “that nobody will learn about his various Fake News statements.”
He also urged Republicans to stop using Maher as an example of a liberal voice moving closer to conservative views.
“Our Base, the Greatest of All Time, laughs at your weakness when you do it!” Trump wrote.
Maher Previously Described Trump as ‘Gracious’
The comments mark a sharp contrast to Maher’s own account of the April 2025 dinner. During an episode of “Real Time,” Maher said Trump was “gracious” and more self-aware in private than he appears in public.
“The guy I met is not the guy who the night before the dinner shit-Tweeted a bunch of nasty crap,” Maher said at the time. “He laughs. I’ve never seen him laugh in public. But he does, including at himself. He’s not fake.”
The exchange highlights the ongoing tension between Trump and late-night television hosts, even after private efforts at civility.
