The 40-year-old actress shared an update while appearing on The Graham Norton Show on Friday, Feb. 6. Seyfried famously played Sophie in Mamma Mia! and its sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, alongside Meryl Streep, who starred as her mother, Donna.
Speaking honestly, Seyfried said she isn’t sure whether Sophie will be part of the third film — even though the project appears to be moving forward.
“If I don’t get it, I will be p---ed,” she joked. “I really want to be in it, but I don’t know much else about it.”
Despite the uncertainty, Seyfried has strong ideas about where Sophie’s story could go. In a previous interview with PEOPLE, she said she imagines Sophie as a mom, raising children on a Greek island — just like Donna once did.
“I love playing a mother,” Seyfried said. “I would love to explore motherhood and raising kids in that beautiful setting.”
In real life, Seyfried is already a mom. She shares daughter Nina, 8, and son Thomas, 5, with her husband, Thomas Sadoski.
Even without knowing the full plot, Seyfried is confident about one thing if Mamma Mia 3 happens. “There will be a lot of singing and dancing,” she said, adding that she plans to keep pushing for the movie to be made.
Good news for fans came last year when producer Judy Craymer confirmed to Deadline that the script for the third film is already finished.
While waiting for updates on the musical sequel, Seyfried has been busy with new work. She currently stars in the historical drama The Testament of Ann Lee, which she also discussed on Norton’s show.
The film explores the Shaker movement in the late 18th century, and Seyfried described the role as both brave and empowering. She also admitted that mastering a Manchester accent for the part was a major challenge.
“Boy, it was tough,” she said with a laugh.
For now, Seyfried — and fans around the world — will have to wait and see if Sophie sings and dances her way back onto the Greek island one more time.
