William H. Macy Says Shared Passion and Family Life Are the Secret to His Long Marriage With Felicity Huffman

William H. Macy says there is no complicated formula behind his long and lasting marriage to his wife, Felicity Huffman — just mutual respect, a shared love for acting, and a strong focus on family.

Speaking to Us Weekly at the 2026 Critics Choice Awards in Los Angeles, the 75-year-old actor joked that the secret is simple: marrying the right person. He praised Huffman as a “fabulous human being” and a “magnificent actor,” adding that their relationship has always been rooted in their shared life in show business.

Macy explained that acting has played a major role in keeping them connected over the years. The couple met in the early 1980s at the Atlantic Theater Company in New York City and dated on and off for 15 years before getting married in 1997. Even today, they still enjoy talking about roles, performances, and the craft they both love.

Family, however, has always come first. Macy said they were intentional about giving their children a normal upbringing while raising them in Los Angeles. The couple share two daughters, Sophia, 25, and Georgia, 23. While their eldest has pursued acting, Macy said they largely kept their kids out of the entertainment industry while growing up.

Nearly three decades into their marriage, the family continues to spend meaningful time together. Macy shared that they rang in the New Year in Colorado with their daughters and a large group of their friends. He described the experience of spending the holidays with more than a dozen 20-somethings as both “exciting and bewildering.”

Looking ahead, Macy said he and Huffman have been thoughtful about their plans for 2026. The couple recently sat down together to talk about their goals for the year and even made a short list of what they want. Macy said he feels optimistic and confident that the year ahead will be a good one.

The couple’s relationship has not been without challenges. Huffman faced intense public scrutiny in 2019 after pleading guilty to charges related to the college admissions scandal. She served 11 days in prison, paid a fine, and completed community service. In later interviews, she openly spoke about the shame she felt and how deeply the experience changed her life.

Despite those hardships, Huffman has said her family’s support helped her move forward. She has repeatedly expressed gratitude for her husband and children standing by her during that difficult time.

Professionally, Macy also had reason to celebrate at this year’s Critics Choice Awards. His film Train Dreams received five nominations and won Best Cinematography. Macy praised the film’s writing and story, describing it as a moving portrayal of a simple man’s life and quiet heroism at the turn of the 20th century.

After years of success, setbacks, and growth, Macy’s message about marriage remains straightforward: shared passions, open communication, and staying grounded in family can make all the difference.
