“The Housemaid” Crosses $300 Million Worldwide, Becoming a Major Box Office Hit

“The Housemaid” has crossed $300 million at the global box office, marking a major success for the mid-budget thriller.

The R-rated psychological film, starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, has earned $116 million in North America and $189.1 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $305 million.

Released by Lionsgate, “The Housemaid” cost just $35 million to produce, making it highly profitable for the studio. The movie opened before Christmas with a modest $19 million domestically but continued to draw audiences into the new year, boosted by strong reviews and positive word of mouth.

Internationally, the film has performed especially well. Last weekend, it ranked No. 1 in several overseas markets, including the United Kingdom, France, Mexico, Brazil and Spain, despite opening nearly a month earlier in those territories. Top international markets include the United Kingdom ($36.4 million), France ($33.4 million), Latin America ($26.2 million), Australia and New Zealand ($15.3 million), and Spain ($12.5 million).

Directed by Paul Feig and based on the best-selling novel by Freida McFadden, the film follows a young woman with a dark past who is hired as a live-in maid for a wealthy family. Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar play the seemingly perfect couple whose lives hide disturbing secrets.

Due to the film’s strong performance—and the fact that McFadden wrote two sequels—a follow-up titled “The Housemaid’s Secret” is already in development. Sweeney, Feig and Michele Morrone, who plays the groundskeeper, are expected to return.

“The Housemaid” is now the highest-grossing film led by Sweeney, surpassing 2023’s “Anyone but You,” which earned $220.2 million worldwide. While she also appeared in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” that role was brief. The success comes shortly after the box office failure of last year’s “Christy,” a biographical drama starring Sweeney that earned just $1.9 million worldwide.

The film is also a career high for Feig, overtaking his 2011 hit “Bridesmaids,” which grossed $289.3 million. For producer Todd Lieberman, it marks his fourth film to cross $300 million globally, following “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Proposal” and “Wonder.”
