Jonathan Tropper, who wrote the movie, spoke with PEOPLE on Thursday, Jan. 15, while attending the premiere of another film he worked on, The Wrecking Crew. Tropper said filming on Starfighter wrapped at the end of December.
“I think Shawn has made a phenomenal movie,” Tropper said, referring to director Shawn Levy. “Gosling is amazing to watch, and I’m really excited to bring new characters and new worlds to the franchise. We’re doing something totally new.”
Star Wars: Starfighter is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 28, 2027. It will follow The Mandalorian and Grogu, making it one of the first Star Wars movies to reach theaters since The Rise of Skywalker ended the sequel trilogy in 2019.
Unlike The Mandalorian and Grogu, which continues the Disney+ series, Starfighter will be a standalone movie and the first fully original Star Wars film in several years.
Details about the story remain limited. Gosling was introduced as the film’s lead during a Star Wars Celebration event in Tokyo in April 2025. At the time, Levy said the movie is not a prequel or a sequel, but a new adventure set within the Star Wars universe.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, Levy said the story takes place five years after The Rise of Skywalker and centers on a father and son. In September, Levy shared a photo from the set showing Gosling alongside teen actor Flynn Gray while filming off the coast of Italy. He later confirmed in December that production had officially wrapped.
The movie also stars Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, and Amy Adams, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Tropper’s other new film, The Wrecking Crew, begins streaming on Prime Video on Jan. 28.
