Season 3 of Tell Me Lies introduces a new and troubling relationship for Lucy, showing just how unstable she has become.
Actor Costa D'Angelo joins the cast as Alex, a former foster sibling of Bree (played by Cat Missal). Alex is now studying for a master’s degree at Baird while secretly selling drugs. He develops an intense connection with Lucy (Grace Van Patten), leading to another deeply unhealthy relationship.
Van Patten says Lucy’s dynamic with Alex reflects how dark her mental state has become this season. She explains that Lucy is no longer expressing her pain through friendships or daily life, but instead is processing it through sex, making her struggles more hidden and unresolved.
“She’s so far away from dealing with it in reality,” Van Patten says.
One of the most disturbing aspects of the relationship is Lucy asking Alex to degrade her during sex. Van Patten describes this as Lucy trying to mask deep emotional damage by framing it as a sexual preference, when it is actually rooted in unresolved trauma.
The actor admits the intimate scenes were difficult to film.
D’Angelo says their strong connection off-screen helped make those scenes possible. After meeting during a chemistry read, he and Van Patten quickly built trust.
“The scenes were intense, but you trust each other,” he says, adding that it was his first time being so emotionally vulnerable on screen.
According to D’Angelo, the relationship begins with Lucy and Alex using sex to cope with grief and trauma. Over time, however, it turns darker. As Alex starts to open up and develop real feelings, he becomes afraid of that vulnerability and begins to act in ways he despises.
New episodes of Tell Me Lies are released every Tuesday on Hulu.
