Sasha Calle Looks Back on Supergirl With Gratitude as DC Moves On

Sasha Calle is reflecting on her brief but memorable time as Supergirl with appreciation, even as DC Studios officially passes the cape to a new actor.

Calle made her feature film debut as Kara Zor-El in 2023’s The Flash, becoming the first Latina actor to portray Supergirl on the big screen. The film, directed by Andy Muschietti, faced a difficult release period and mixed reviews, but Calle’s performance stood out as one of its most praised elements.

Despite that reception, her future as Supergirl was cut short when James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios in late 2022 and chose to reboot much of the superhero universe. That shift also affected other major characters, including Batman and Superman.

At the time, Calle described the decision as “heartbreaking” and “confusing.” Now, her perspective has softened. Speaking as Milly Alcock prepares to debut as the new Supergirl this summer, Calle says she feels nothing but gratitude for the opportunity she was given.

“I’m so grateful,” Calle says, recalling the moment she learned she’d landed the role. “It was surreal. That experience opened a door for me into a world where I get to make art, and I loved it.”

That door has led her to her latest project, The Rip, where she reunites with The Flash costar Ben Affleck. The Netflix crime thriller also stars Matt Damon and is directed by Joe Carnahan.

Calle speaks warmly about working with Affleck and Damon, praising their kindness and leadership on set. “They’re absolute legends, but also just very human,” she says. “They lead with grace.”

In The Rip, Affleck and Damon play Miami cops whose partnership unravels after they discover millions of dollars during a routine operation. Calle plays Desi, a woman caught in the chaos after the police raid the stash house where she’s been living. The role allowed her to share scenes with nearly every major character in the film, something she calls a “blessing” as an actor.

While The Rip doesn’t require the same physical intensity as playing a superhero, Calle admits she misses stunt-heavy roles. She hopes to return to more action-oriented projects in the future and jokes that she’s eager to “hit some people” on screen again.

As for a possible return to Supergirl someday, Calle isn’t closing the door completely. “If I get a call, I’m open to receiving it,” she says.

The Rip begins streaming on Netflix this Friday.
