Miley Cyrus Says Awards Season Should Be About Art, Not Competition

Miley Cyrus has shared her thoughts on awards season, saying that true performance goes far beyond trophies, rankings or numbers.

The singer recently released ‘Dream As One’, a new song featured in the end credits of Avatar: Fire And Ash, the latest film in the sci-fi franchise directed by her friend James Cameron.

On January 3, Cyrus attended the Palm Springs Film Awards, where she praised the event for removing the pressure of competition. Unlike many awards shows, all winners are announced in advance.

“So often during awards season, we’re set up as competitors, but we’re meant to be a community, not opponents,” Cyrus said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “There is no single best — only our personal best work.”

She added that reducing art to numbers and rankings can make it feel like a sport, even though performance is far more personal. According to Cyrus, every artist brings something unique by sharing their inner world, and each contribution leaves its own place in history.

Cyrus also spoke about identity and creativity, saying everyone performs in some way, even when they are being authentic. She said she admires that quality in actors, actresses and drag performers alike, noting that self-creation itself is an art form.

During her speech, she thanked the filmmakers behind Avatar and joked about her small role in the long-running project. “They’ve worked on this movie for 16 years,” she said. “I’ve been involved for about a month, and I still get to go to all the same events.”

‘Dream As One’ was created with Andrew Wyatt, Mark Ronson, and composer Simon Franglen. The song was partly inspired by the devastating fires that hit Los Angeles earlier this year.

The release follows Cyrus’ recent revelation that she attended the 2025 Oscars with the goal of pitching herself as a songwriter for film, highlighting her growing interest in working behind the scenes in cinema as well as on stage.
