Last month, the 73-year-old actor was reportedly served a notice demanding payment of $59,100 in alleged back rent or to vacate the property within three days. Shortly afterward, a $100,000 campaign appeared on GoFundMe, claiming it was created to help cover “immediate housing-related expenses” and prevent him from losing his home.
In a video posted Monday, Jan. 5, to his Instagram account, Rourke said he was shocked by the campaign and insisted it was not authorized by him.
“I’m frustrated and confused,” he said in the video, adding that he did not understand why anyone would create a fundraiser on his behalf. Rourke stressed that he would never ask fans or strangers for money and described the situation as humiliating.
The GoFundMe campaign was started by Liya-Joelle Jones, who identified herself as an assistant to Rourke’s manager, Kimberly Hines. In the campaign description, Jones stated that the fundraiser was created with Rourke’s full permission. However, Rourke directly contradicted that claim, saying he had no involvement and planned to consult his lawyer.
Despite his objections and his request that supporters stop donating and seek refunds, the campaign had raised more than $95,000 by Monday evening.
Reflecting on his career in the video, Rourke admitted he had not always managed it well and spoke openly about undergoing more than two decades of therapy to address past personal struggles. He said he has worked hard to change and is no longer the person he once was.
Rourke also acknowledged experiencing a recent financial setback related to a rental property and said he borrowed money from a close friend to deal with it. Still, he emphasized that accepting public charity is not something he would ever do.
“I’ve got too much pride,” he said, again urging donors to get their money back.
According to property records and a legal complaint, the home in question is a three-bedroom, 1,600-square-foot house. Rourke allegedly signed the lease in March 2025 at $5,200 per month, with the rent later increasing to $7,000. In addition to the claimed unpaid rent, the landlord, Eric Goldie, is seeking attorney fees and asking the court to terminate the lease.
For now, Rourke says he plans to return to work and reassured fans that he is doing fine, despite the controversy surrounding the fundraiser and his housing situation.
