Leonardo DiCaprio Recalls When Brad Pitt Thought His Parents Were Movie Extras

Leonardo DiCaprio is laughing about a memorable moment from the set of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood — when Brad Pitt mistook his parents for background actors.

In a recent interview, DiCaprio said he invited his father and stepmother to visit the set of Quentin Tarantino’s 1969-set film. Their look fit the era so well that Pitt was convinced they were hired extras.

DiCaprio recalled the moment while driving past Musso & Frank’s restaurant in Hollywood with Pitt. He pointed to two people on the street and said they were his dad and stepmom. Pitt didn’t believe him.

According to DiCaprio, Pitt laughed it off and insisted they were just extras dressed for the movie. Even when DiCaprio tried to explain, Pitt refused to budge. DiCaprio said his parents really do dress that way every day, which made the mix-up even funnier.

The Oscar-winning actor said it was an unforgettable moment and one he still laughs about.

DiCaprio also explained why his parents fit the film’s look so perfectly. His stepmother is a Sikh, and his father was part of the hippie counterculture in Los Angeles during the 1970s. He was involved in the city’s underground art scene, which influenced his style.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, follows fading TV actor Rick Dalton, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, and his stunt double Cliff Booth, played by Brad Pitt, as they navigate a changing film industry in late-1960s Hollywood. The film also stars Margot Robbie, Austin Butler, Margaret Qualley, and Timothy Olyphant.
