Mother Gothel is the main villain of the 2010 animated hit. She is manipulative, selfish, and obsessed with staying young — something she achieves by using the magical powers in Rapunzel’s hair. The role has always been seen as one that needs sharp comedy, darkness, and emotional depth, which is why fans quickly rallied behind Hahn.
The project briefly made headlines in October when Scarlett Johansson was said to be circling the role of Gothel. However, the two-time Oscar nominee ultimately stepped away due to scheduling conflicts tied to Batman II and The Exorcist reboot. As soon as Johansson’s name surfaced, fans flooded social media pushing Disney to consider Hahn, best known for WandaVision and Agatha All Along.
Casting is already taking shape elsewhere. Teagan Croft has been cast as Rapunzel, while Milo Manheim will play Flynn Rider, the charming thief who helps Rapunzel escape the tower where she’s been hidden away.
The film is set to be directed by Michael Gracey, who previously helmed The Greatest Showman. The script comes from Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and is based on the original animated movie, which earned nearly $592 million at the worldwide box office. Kristin Burr is producing through Burr! Productions, with Lucy Kitada serving as executive producer.
The original Tangled also earned an Oscar nomination for the song “I See the Light,” featuring music by legendary composer Alan Menken and lyrics by Glenn Slater.
Hahn comes into the role with serious awards credibility. She is a four-time Emmy nominee, most recently recognized for her work in The Studio, Tiny Beautiful Things, WandaVision, and Transparent. If the deal closes, her take on Mother Gothel could become one of Disney’s most memorable live-action villains yet — and a victory for fans who made their voices heard online.
