The decision comes after Renee Nicole Good, a mother and poet, was shot and killed by an officer from Immigration and Customs Enforcement during a protest on Wednesday. Her death has sparked days of demonstrations and growing anger toward federal immigration enforcement in Minneapolis.
In a statement shared on Instagram, Mulaney said the situation in the city made it impossible for him to go forward with the shows.
“What’s happening in your city is heartbreaking,” he wrote. “I hate to postpone shows in a town going through such awful challenges and such grief, because it feels unfair to the audience.”
Mulaney explained that safety was his main concern, saying he did not feel comfortable asking thousands of people to leave their homes, gather at a venue, and then travel back at night while tensions remain high.
“I know a fun stand-up show could be a nice distraction,” he added, “but it doesn’t sit right with me to put anyone at risk.”
The comedian is currently touring his “Mr. Whatever” stand-up show. He plans to resume the tour on Jan. 15 in St. Louis, before heading to Seattle and New York. The postponed Minneapolis shows have been rescheduled for April 10, 11, and 12, and tickets for this weekend will be honored on those new dates. Fans seeking refunds have been advised to contact their original point of purchase or Ticketmaster.
Many fans praised Mulaney’s decision online. “This was the right call,” one person commented. Another urged him to use his platform to support the local community and speak out against ICE activity in the city.
Meanwhile, protests in Minneapolis have continued. At a demonstration on Thursday, protesters were met with tear gas. While some federal officials have described the shooting as lawful, city and state officials strongly rejected those claims, calling them “propaganda” and “garbage.”
With demonstrations ongoing and emotions running high, Mulaney’s postponement reflects the wider uncertainty and tension in Minneapolis as the city grapples with grief, anger, and demands for accountability.
