Joe Keery Slams Trump After ICE Shooting Sparks Minneapolis Protests

Joe Keery, best known for playing Steve Harrington on Stranger Things, has spoken out strongly against Donald Trump following a fatal shooting involving a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent.

The incident happened on Wednesday, January 8, in Minneapolis, where 37-year-old U.S. citizen Renee Nicole Good was shot and killed by an ICE agent. Almost immediately, the Trump administration defended the agent’s actions, calling the shooting an act of self-defence.

Trump echoed that defence on Truth Social, claiming the situation involved “professional agitators” and accusing Good of violently running over an ICE officer before being shot. His comments quickly spread online and were met with anger and disbelief.

The response on the ground was swift. Protests broke out across Minneapolis, with demonstrators condemning both U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the former president’s remarks.

Keery added his voice to the backlash by posting Trump’s message to his Instagram Story. Reacting to the statement, the 33-year-old actor wrote: “Zero human decency. Stop this man.” His post was widely shared, adding to the growing criticism from public figures.

City leaders also pushed back hard. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey rejected the self-defence narrative outright after reviewing video footage of the incident.

“They’re already trying to spin this as an action of self-defence,” Frey said at a press conference. “Having seen the video myself, I want to tell everybody directly — that is bulls***.” He later issued a blunt message to ICE agents, telling them to leave the city.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said he has ordered preparations for the state’s National Guard while urging residents to protest peacefully. He also criticized federal officials, saying the state does not need further involvement from Washington.

“To Donald Trump and Kristi Noem, you’ve done enough,” Walz said, making it clear Minnesota wants to handle the situation without additional federal interference.

As protests continue and questions mount around the shooting, the incident has become a flashpoint in the wider debate over ICE operations, police accountability, and political rhetoric — with voices from Hollywood to City Hall demanding answers.
