The Abbott Elementary star recently shared that she was struggling financially when she joined Chris Rock on his Total Blackout comedy tour in 2017. At the time, James said her clothes were worn out, her boots were dusty, and she often looked run-down on stage.
Speaking on Vulture’s Good One podcast, James said she had grown used to dressing poorly, partly to avoid unwanted attention as a female comedian. Earlier in her career, she explained, wearing short skirts often led to uncomfortable remarks, and over time she felt she had lost sight of herself.
While touring the southern U.S., James noticed Rock looking at her beat-up boots. Not long after, his assistant invited her to fly to Los Angeles for a full makeover. James said she didn’t feel insulted at all — instead, she felt grateful.
She compared the experience to the movie Pretty Woman, recalling how she was shown racks of expensive designer clothes she had never seen up close before. Afterward, she proudly showed off her new look to Rock.
What meant the most to her was how Rock handled the moment. He never brought up what he had done or sought praise. According to James, he simply looked at her and said, “You’re doing well for yourself,” before moving on with the tour.
James truly did go on to do well. In 2021, she landed the role of Principal Ava Coleman on Abbott Elementary, a character that quickly became a fan favorite. Though she has said she never planned on becoming an actress, James now feels the role was meant for her.
“When people say they can’t imagine anyone else playing Ava, that’s the goal,” she said. “They’re going to have to kill me off.”
From worn-out boots to award-winning television, James’ journey is a reminder of how one moment of kindness can help change everything.
