Adam Sandler Says His Marriage to Wife Jackie Was ‘Destiny’ as He Accepts Major Film Honor

Adam Sandler believes some things in life are simply meant to be — especially his marriage to wife Jackie Sandler.

The 59-year-old actor was honored with the prestigious Chairman’s Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival’s star-studded Film Awards Gala on Saturday, Jan. 3, in Palm Springs, California. Sandler was recognized for his acclaimed performance in Jay Kelly, the new showbiz comedy-drama led by George Clooney.

During his heartfelt acceptance speech, Sandler reflected on the different paths his life could have taken if he had chosen to work as an electrical engineer alongside his father instead of pursuing acting. While the career outcome might have changed, Sandler said one thing would have remained the same.

“I sometimes think about it — if I didn’t click that year and I did go work for my dad, what my life would be right now,” he told the audience. “First off, I’m thinking I’d probably still be married to my wife, Jackie. That’s destiny. Nothing stops that.”

Sandler, who married Jackie in June 2003, added humor to the moment by joking that their alternate life would likely include “a different house,” with “like 10 less bathrooms and fewer statues of me.”

The couple share two daughters, Sadie, born in 2006, and Sunny, born in 2008, and have often appeared together at red carpet events throughout Sandler’s decades-long career.

The actor was introduced at the ceremony by Laura Dern, who praised his range and lasting impact in Hollywood. In Jay Kelly, directed and co-written by Noah Baumbach, Sandler plays Ron Sukenick, the long-suffering manager of a famous movie star. The role marks one of Sandler’s rare dramatic turns — and one that has earned widespread critical acclaim.

Sandler’s performance has already been recognized throughout awards season, including nominations and honors at the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globe Awards.

“Adam Sandler delivers a deeply moving and career-best performance in Jay Kelly,” Palm Springs International Film Festival Chairman Nachhattar Singh Chandi said in a statement. “It is a performance which underscores his standing as one of the most versatile and respected actors of his generation.”

This year’s Palm Springs International Film Festival also honored a long list of major stars, including Miley Cyrus, Timothée Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Amanda Seyfried, Kate Hudson and Michael B. Jordan.

Jay Kelly, which co-stars Clooney, Dern, Billy Crudup, Greta Gerwig, Riley Keough and Emily Mortimer, is now streaming on Netflix.
